Spiritual:

 1.    The Catholic Bible – If it isn’t a Catholic Bible, you will be missing 7 books and parts of 2 other books. These are the deuterocanonical books which are regarded as being an integral part of the Canon of the Old Testament and which are missing from most Protestant Bibles. My favourite versions of the Bible are the Douay-Rheims version (older text), and the RSV—Revised Standard Version. (The New Revised Standard Version, the version which is used in our Canadian Mass, is the version that made changes to include inclusive language.)

 2.    The Catechism of the Catholic Church – Every Catholic who wants to grow in the faith needs this book.  We can’t grow in our faith if we don’t know it, and how better to do that than to read and study this great gift which was one of the things that grew out of the second Vatican Council, and was prepared over six years of intense work? In the full version, it is a most inspiring and beautiful book which can be used as well for meditation. This book can be read online at:

3.    Vatican Council II Documents – This is also an important book for people who want to grow in their faith. Of the 16 documents, 4 are Constitutions and of these 4, 2 are Dogmatic Constitutions. You will see them quoted in much of your reading, and will enjoy reading at least these four—if not all of them. They can be read online at:
They can also be found, possibly more easily, at the EWTN site:

 4.    Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales – One of the finest religious masterpieces of all time, this book has been an accessible and relevant treasure of devotion for Christians of every age and  in every walk of life. It is a unique handbook of religious reflection written by St Francis who was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church.

 5.    Imitation of Christ by Thomas A’Kempis – This incomparable book has become, after the Bible, probably the most widely read spiritual book. It covers a wide variety of topics and can be a great aid in our growth in the interior life. This is a keeper, and one to which you will often want to refer.

 6.    Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration by Joseph Ratzinger – Pope Benedict XVI – Pope Benedict says: “This book is my personal search ‘for the face of the Lord.’” The reader is invited to share this authentic encounter with Jesus— face-to-face in His true identity. Besides getting to know Jesus more intimately, we come to see more clearly the gentle and deep holiness of our Holy Father. What a great gift this book and the following one are for members of his flock.

 7.    Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week – From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection by Joseph Ratzinger – Pope Benedict XVI – Of this book, Pope Benedict says: “Only in this second volume do we encounter the decisive sayings and events of Jesus’ life …. I … hope that I have been granted an insight into the figure of our Lord that can be helpful to all readers who seek to encounter Jesus and to believe in him.” A magnificent experience!

8.    The Fulfillment of All Desire: A Guidebook for the Journey to God Based on the Wisdom of the Saints by Ralph Martin – This is the book for people who want an easy-to-understand guidebook to enable them to set out/continue upon the path to holiness. Ralph Martin’s specialty is to take profound spiritual treasures and make them accessible to ordinary people. “He communicates a burning desire to respond to the Lord’s call.” This is a very inspiring book which will help people at every stage of their spiritual journey.

 9.    To Know Christ Jesus by Frank Sheed – This is a spiritual classic which helps readers to “develop a deeper, more profound knowledge of Jesus Christ.” Through this book, we will come to know Jesus as he actually lived among us throughout his entire life on earth. Frank Sheed has a unique gift of warmth, wit, and wisdom which makes his works books you will read over and over again and won’t want to part with.

10.  Excellent Catholic Spiritual books by Fr. Jacques Philippe.

Apologetics and current problems:

1.   Theology and Sanity by Frank Sheed – Frank Sheed says in his Foreword: “This book contains theology, not the great mass of it that theologians need, but the indispensable minimum that every man needs in order that he may be living mentally in the real world—which is what the word “sanity” means in my title.” He goes on, in this remarkable book, to explain this further and present one of the most helpful and fascinating books that I have ever read. Definitely one of my favourites.

2.    The Courage to Be Catholic by George Weigel – This book treats of the Church in crisis and the call to holiness which must be lived more intensely by every single member of the Church. George Weigel is one of the leading commentators on religion and public life and has written an easy-to-read and very interesting, relevant, and helpful book which deals with the important issues that threaten our Church in today’s culture of dissent.

 3.   The Fathers of the Church – Your Essential Guide to the Teachings of the Early Church by Jimmy Akin – “This groundbreaking work presents the teachings of the early Christians in a way unlike any other book. It flings open the doors of the crucial but little-known age covering the birth of Christianity and the triumphant march of the gospel throughout the ancient world.” This is a valuable book and a great resource to have in your library.

 4.   Absolute Relativism  by Chris Stefanick - This dynamite little book gives the clearest, most thorough, and most succinct explanation of relativism I have ever read. Chris Stefanick covers all the bases, and does so in a way that captivates his readers and keeps their interest and  makes it difficult for them to put the book down. I believe this book is extremely important for our time and that it will be a great help in understanding and doing something about one of the biggest problems in our culture today. I highly recommend it to all.

Conversion:

 1.    Surprised by Truth by Patrick Madrid, Editor – This is the first in a series of three books by Patrick Madrid in which (in this first book) eleven converts give their reasons for becoming Catholic. These stories provide us with a wealth of Catholic Apologetics. We read of heroism and struggles and are introduced to people who have become very committed Catholics. Books Two and Three of the same title are equally as valuable.

 2.    Home At Last by Rosalind Moss, Editor – Eleven more people who found their way to the Catholic Church tell their stories. This includes Roalind’s own conversion story. The journey of each one is a story of courage.

 3.    Crossing the Tiber by Steve Ray – This is Steve Ray’s conversion story which he describes in his sub-title: Evangelical Protestants Discover the Historical Church.  Besides being a very moving story of his conversion, it is a very instructive document. He has covered in multiple footnotes and scripture quotes very important information that the reader will find extremely valuable.
